Beta Readers: What are they? What is their purpose?  Do you have to pay them?  Where can you find them?

Beta readers…a vital part of the writing process….the first eyes besides your own on your book. Beta readers are like trial readers. They are there to help you make your story the best it can be before you publish it.

I was lucky, and had a few friends and my mother in law willing to read my book for free. They gave wonderful feedback, editing suggestions, and encouragement.

Beta readers exist to help find the inconsistencies in the story, the plot holes, the edits you missed, pacing of the story, and character development from the reader’s perspective.

In my opinion they are vital to making sure your story is ready to go to the publishing step.

If you don’t have friends and family to beta read for you, you may have to pay someone, or find people on social media to help you out. I just didn’t feel comfortable giving my uncopyrighted book to strangers in case something went wrong.

You can find beta readers everywhere. I see lots of authors ask their followers on social media for beta reading.

Beta readers shouldn’t charge you, it’s voluntary that they read your story before everyone else.

If you want my advice, get beta readers, more than one at least. It will make your story better. Be open to critique, and having to edit your manuscript more. It is so helpful to have more eyes on it than your own.
