These are some tips I have learned about developing your characters through the story.

1. No long inner monologues. No reader wants to read a giant paragraph about what your character is thinking of doing. It goes along with Show, Don’t Tell! It makes the story so much more interesting.
2. Have proof readers, beta readers, and self edit at least 2 times. I found lots of things I needed to fix, but more than one set of eyes is definitely better. They found inconsistencies in my character development that were huge things I needed to fix. 
3. Don’t rush the character’s development. Put it in gradually through the story, they should change over time, learning throughout the story.
4. Introduce the character’s inner conflict as soon as you can in the story, it gives them depth and pulls your reader in.
